春三月。このイラストは英国の風刺画家ジョージ・クルックシャンク（1792-1878）がロンドンの "Comic Almanack" に寄せた暦の一枚「三月の風」である。これは英国の天気俚諺 "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers"（三月の風と四月のにわか雨が五月の花を咲かす）に由来する。ロンドンは気候が不安定で、時折冷たい風が吹くようだ。しかし今は厳しい季節だけど、待てば海路の日和あり、五月になれば花が咲くというわけである。日本でも三月から四月にかけて、菜種梅雨（なたねづゆ）や花冷えなどで冷たい雨が降ったり、爆弾低気圧で大嵐になることがある。また、四月後半には二十四節気の一つ穀雨（こくう）がある。穀物を育てる雨が降るとい意味だ。

ところで三月の風といえば、アメリカンルーツ音楽が好きな私はオリジナル・カーター・ファミリーの "March Winds Gonna Blow My Blues All Away"（三月の風が憂いを吹き飛ばす）を思い出す。上記の歌詞はアメリカの女優で1920年代と30年代に一世風靡、トーチソング（片思いの歌）の女王と呼ばれた、ルース・エッティング（1897–1978) が1935年に吹き込んだ、その名もずばり "March Winds and April Showers"（三月の風と四月のにわか雨）である。下記リンク先の YouTube で、哀愁に満ちた歌声をぜひお聴きください。
