スコットランド古謡 Barbara Allen アパラチアへの旅

2017年2月に「南部アパラチアで英国古謡を蒐集した民謡研究家」と題した一文を掲載した。2000年に公開された映画 Songcatcher のモデルは English Folk Songs From The Southern Appalachians（南部アパラチアの英国民謡）を著した、英国の音楽研究家セシル・シャープ（1859-1924）と、民謡蒐集家オリーブ・デイム・キャンベル（1882-1954）だったが、史実と違うという主旨だった。挿入歌にはエミルー・ハリスやヘイゼル・ディッケンズなど、カントリー音楽の歌い手も加わっているのだが、所詮ハリウッド仕立て娯楽映画と割り切ったのだろうか。今もこの点は残念に思っているが、映画全篇に流れた音楽は素晴らしいものだった。特にエミー・ロッサム扮する少女がスコットランド古謡 Barbara Allen を歌うシーンが印象的だった。ただ無伴奏ゆえ冗長に過ぎると判断したのだろうか、2番までしか歌われていなかったのが惜しい。

He sent his servants after her
And for his sake he sent them:
My master's sick and about to die
And for your sake he's dying.

Slowly, slowly, she got up,
And went away unto him,
Saying: Kind Sir,
You are pale looking.

O yes, my love, I'm mighty sick,
A kiss or two

She saw his cold corpse coming.

Go bring him here as cold as clay
And let me look upon him.

Go and tell to my parents most dear,
Who would not let me have him.
Go and tell to the rest of my kin folk,
Who caused me to forsake him.

Sweet Willie was buried on Saturday night,
Barbara was buried on Sunday.
Both of the mothers died for them,
Was buried on Easter Monday

Sweet Willie was buried in the new churchyard,
Barbara was buried close beside him.
A red rose grew from sweet Willie's breast,
A briar grew from her feet.

このバラードには実にさまざまなバリエーションがあるが、映画ではジョージア州ハーバーシャム郡のフローレンス・マッキニーが、1910年に歌った歌詞とメロディーが採用されている。シャープが米国に滞在したのは1916年から1918年だから、蒐集したのはキャンベルだった。というか、収録曲の多くをキャンベルが蒐集したのではと私は想像している。1917年の初版にあったキャンベルの名が、民謡蒐集家モード・カープルズ（1885–1976）が編纂に加わった1932年の改訂版から消えているのがちょっと腑に落ちない。現在は2012年に出版された2分冊の新装版が日本でも入手可能である。それはともかく Barbara Allen は本国で忘れかけていたバラードだった。これを掬い上げ、蘇らせたシャープの功績は大きい。そしてエミー・ロッサムばかりではなく、ジュディ・コリンズ、ボブ・ディラン、ジョーン・バエズ、エミルー・ハリス、エディ・アーノルド、マック・ワイズマン、ハイロ・ブラウン、テネシー・アーニーフォード、エバリー・ブラザーズ、ドリス・デー、ドリー・パートンなど、知り得る限りのフォーク&カントリー系ミュージシャンがこの歌を取り上げている。おそらく300を上回る録音が残されているのではないだろうか。下記音楽ファイル共有サイトで、エミー・ロッサムおよびエミルー・ハリスの Barbara Allen を続けて聴くことができる。
