2021年9月11日、4機のアメリカ国内線民間航空機がほぼ同時にハイジャックされ、アメリカの経済、軍事を象徴する建物に相次いで突入する自爆テロが行われた。午前8時45分頃、ボストン発ロサンゼルス行きアメリカン航空11便がニューヨークの世界貿易センターの北棟ビルに突入した。続いて午前9時3分頃、ボストン発ロサンゼルス行きユナイテッド航空175便が南棟ビルに突入した。2機の飛行機の突入により、二つのビルは午前10時頃ほぼ同時に倒壊した。さらに午前9時45分頃、ワシントン発ロサンゼルス行きアメリカン航空77便がワシントンの国防省ビルに突入、建物の一部が倒壊、炎上した。また、午前10時10分頃、ニューアーク発サンフランシスコ行きユナイテッド航空93便がピッツバーグ近郊の林に墜落した。このテロによる犠牲者は合計3,062名（2月25日米当局発表）に上り、うち邦人死者・行方不明者は24名、うち遺体が確認されたのは9名であった。下記リンク先はヴァージニア大学ミラーセンターの分析記事、キャサリン・ハイスケスによる「タイムライン：9月11日のテロ攻撃アメリカ人にとって21世紀の幕開けを決定づけた日」です。
