音楽雑話（３）スコットランド古謡『バーバラ・アレン』の南アパラチアへの旅

歌詞集『忘れな草ぐさ』 に掲載された「バーバラ・アレン」の歌詞（1840年）

かれこれ10年前の2016年に「南部アパラチアで英国古謡を蒐集した民謡研究家」と題した一文を当ブログに掲載した。2000年に公開された映画 "Songcatcher"（邦題『歌追い人』） のモデルは "English Folk Songs From The Southern Appalachians"（南部アパラチアの英国民謡）を著した、英国の音楽研究家セシル・シャープ（1859-1924）と、民謡蒐集家のオリーブ・デイム・キャンベル（1882-1954）だったが、史実と違うという主旨だった。挿入歌にはエミルー・ハリスやヘイゼル・ディッケンズなどのカントリー音楽の歌い手も加わっていたのだが、所詮ハリウッド仕立て娯楽映画と割り切ったのだろうか。今もこの点は残念に思っているが、映画全篇に流れた音楽は素晴らしいものだった。特にエミー・ロッサム扮する少女がスコットランド古謡『バーバラ・アレン』を歌うシーンが印象的だった。ただ無伴奏ゆえ冗長に過ぎると判断したのだろうか、2番までしか歌われていなかったのが惜しい。

セシル・シャープ＆オリーブ・デイム・キャンベル『南部アパラチアの英国民謡』(1)(2)

このバラードには実にさまざまなバリエーションがあるが、映画ではジョージア州ハーバーシャム郡のフローレンス・マッキニーが、1910年に歌った歌詞とメロディーが採用されている。シャープが米国に滞在したのは1916年から1918年だから、蒐集したのはキャンベルだった。というか、収録曲の多くをキャンベルが蒐集したのではと私は想像している。1917年の初版にあったキャンベルの名が、民謡蒐集家モード・カープルズ（1885–1976）が編纂に加わった1932年の改訂版から消えているのがちょっと腑に落ちない。現在は2012年に出版された2分冊の新装版が日本でも入手可能である。それはともかく『バーバラ・アレン』は本国で忘れかけていたバラードだった。これを掬い上げ、蘇らせたシャープの功績は大きい。そしてエミー・ロッサムばかりではなく、ジュディ・コリンズ、ボブ・ディラン、ジョーン・バエズ、エミルー・ハリス、エディ・アーノルド、マック・ワイズマン、ハイロ・ブラウン、テネシー・アーニーフォード、エバリー・ブラザーズ、ドリス・デー、ドリー・パートンなど、知り得る限りのフォーク&カントリー系ミュージシャンがこの歌を取り上げている。おそらく300を上回る録音が残されているのではないだろうか。下記音楽共有サイト SoundCloud で、エミー・ロッサムおよびエミルー・ハリスの『バーバラ・アレン』を続けて聴取することができます。
