歌で蘇るマッキンリー大統領暗殺事件

暗殺されたアメリカの大統領は誰れか？と質問されたら、おそらくエイブラハム・リンカーン（1809-1865）とジョン・F・ケネディ（1917-1963）のふたりを誰もがあげるに違いないだろう。しかしジェームズ・ガーフィールド（1831-1881）とウィリアム・マッキンリー（1843-1901）の名を頭に浮かべる人は少ないと思われる。正直言うと私はガーフィールドについては勉強不足で知らなかったが、マッキンリーの名は前から知っていた。ガーフィールドは1881年7月2日午前9時30分、首都ワシントンのボルティモア・アンド・ポトマック駅で、チャールズ・ギトーに狙撃された。今日の医療技術であれば命を落とすことはなかっただろうという、興味深い医療史上の研究があるようだ。マッキンリーはニューヨーク州バッファローで開かれていた、パン・アメリカン博覧会を訪問中の1901年9月6日午後4時7分、無政府主義者レオン・チョルゴシュに暗殺された。セオドア・ルーズベルトが副大統領から昇格した結果、史上最年少の42歳10ヶ月で大統領職に就くことになった。

この歌はチャーリー・プール（1892–1931）&ノースカロライナ・ランブラーズが1926年に録音した『ホワイトハウス・ブルース』である。おそらく事件から余り日が経ってうちに作曲したにも関わらず、政治的配慮からすぐに発表できなかったのではなかろうか。ニュー・ロスト・シティ・ランブラーズ、ビル・モンロー、アール・テーラー、サム・ブッシュなど、主としてブルーグラス音楽系のミュージシャンに歌い継がれ、現在でも頻繁に演奏されている。アメリカのカントリーソングには『オールド 97 の大破』『タイタニック』など、事件事故をテーマにしたトピカルソングが少なからずある。人々は歌によって歴史の記憶が蘇るのである。私がマッキンリー暗殺事件を知ったのはこの『ホワイトハウス・ブルース』を聴いたからだった。
